Haunted Lighthouses – Light Mirador
The Point Lookout Lighthouse is located on a peninsula that marks the entrance to the Potomac River in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. The area was known as a nice vacation spot before the Civil War. Originally part of the grounds of St. Michael, which was held by the first governor of Maryland. This item was used as a summer ski resort, with beach houses and docks. The addition of the lighthouse was used to add the charm of the region.
In 1825, the federal government has determined that the light should be built on Lookout to warn ships of banks and to mark the entry of the Potomac River.
The lighthouse was built in 1830 as a year and a half story wood and masonry construction. The first lighthouse was of little use in navigation has not withstood the lantern of 24 feet above the ground. It was rebuilt in 1883 from the present two two-story buildings and the light was increased to 40 feet.
A fog bell was added in 1872 and updated in 1889. In 1883, the second floor was added to the house to allow housing to house two keepers and their families. When all was said and done, nearly 4,000 men were killed in the field of disease, hunger or exposure. Their bodies were buried in different places in or near the ground beacon. Years later, when these graves were threatened by erosion, were transferred to a location just north of Point Lookout.
The trauma and death associated with the camp may help explain many strange phenomena happened paranormal were reported by the lighthouse keepers and visitors in recent years, thus earning the title "flagship of the most haunted in America."
In the years following the end of the war, the attack of the reports of paranormal incidents in the region began. It was reported strange noises, as no, snoring, unpleasant odors, lights on and off, disembodied voices and the exercise of the talks, laughing, singing happy songs or even help. The lighthouse was handed over to the State of Maryland in 2006. Some months later, the Point Lookout Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed to raise funds to restore the lighthouse and making it accessible to the public as a museum.
The lighthouse is owned by the Navy and is currently closed and not freely accessible to the public. Around Halloween, the place is open from time to time during the day of doors open and sometimes in the evening for a night of limited duration of the paranormal investigations.
